LITK in NYC!!

By popular demand,

I don't own this image, btw. Disclaimer disclaimer o!

The first LITK meet-up in New York City!!

All right, so I figured it would be best to meet up in Manhattan, because it's more central if people from Jersey and el Bronx are attending.

Now, I need suggestions for places we could meet up. Just moved here, so I don't really know any good affordable spots. Also, I was thinking February would be a good time to meet? It'd give time to get the word out, clear up schedules, etc :)

Feel free to spread the word among the blogs (i.e please please pretty please!), maybe re-use the logo, but if you could link back to us, that would be great. I know there's got to be a TON of naturals in the area!!

Let's make this happen!
 =)

**Update** I'm guessing Valentine's Day weekend is going to be pretty booked up for some folk, so how's January 30th or February 6th? Which would y'all prefer?

**Update** So I think February 6th will work out great, it's better to get a date set sooner, so we'll just go with that. I'm feeling the Dallas BBQ as a location, I went to their website and checked out their menu, and it's definitely affordable. Also has okay veggie options. And alcoholic drinks. I would like a dessert menu on that joint, though. I was thinking to aim for an early dinner (no idea what time that entails), so that if folk wanted to party afterwards- wait, it's NYC. Could be a late dinner, and there'd still be time to party. I'ont know no party locations, though. I just like to dance. Without frottage from strange men. iDigress. I'll make an eVite and a Facebook event once I get feedback on the location. Also, I'm just going to keep updating this post and will link it on the sidebar, to keep everything in the same place. Thanks for spreading the word, people!! I'm super excited!!

**Update** All right, darlings, I've been hard at work creating the events, phew. There is now a Facebook event, you can RSVP there, invite as many people as you like and spread the word. The meet-up is going to be at:
Dallas BBQ
241 West 42nd Street
New York, NY
7:00 PM

There is also an Evite for the meet-up, this can be emailed around, forwarded, etc. You may also RSVP there if you don't quite feel like being all up on Facebook. Thanks to YoungBlackBeauty for the idea! Any questions, comments, concerns, ideas, etc- feel free to share them with us =)

**Update** Dallas BBQ doesn't take reservations. A change of location seems to be in order, and to avoid reservation issues, I'm considering moving it to a bar or lounge. However, I don't know if all attending are over 21. Damn this location issue! Imma be working on it real hard though!! Come through with suggestions (thanks to CJ on FB for suggestions, was so helpful!!)

Possible locations now include:

I'll be checking them out, and favoring a place that can give us a reservation, to avoid the risk of us waiting around, and that is easy to get to. I'm thinking the meet-up is going to be more of an appetizer/sides and drinks thing, since we're going to be talking our butts off, so check out the menus through the above links. I've only been to Havana Alma de Cuba out of the choices, and it's a lovely place, so I'm leaning towards that.

The location will be set by the close of the weekend. Many thanks to those who contributed, and to Aisha for actually calling the restaurant! My heart is warmed, and I'm going to do my best to make sure this is an awesome meet-up!!

**Update** So the venue has been officially changed to:

14th West 4th Street
Between Broadway & Mercer
6PM

For exact subway directions, use HopStop. I also tweaked the time to 6pm to avoid the Saturday evening rush. I checked out the restaurant and spoke to people there, I'll be calling ahead so they can prep for us, and while they don't take reservations, they assured me it wouldn't be a problem to accomodate us. They also have a pretty big space and a full bar :) so I think it will work out great! Please note, they are a cash only joint!

I will be there earlier to welcome folk, what distinguishing feature would you like me to adopt? A clown nose? Gently holding a rose? My pink fascinator? My sugared margarita glass? Trust me, there will be a sugared margarita glass...

Would y'all like name-tags? There's like 30 people coming, according to the Facebook event. Let me know :)

Also, to answer Tulipe's question, this event is open to all. You can be relaxed, weaved up, braided up, dreadlocked, or free-form natural- you are welcome! I think it would actually be awesome to have interactions with non-naturals at the event. This is the first US meet-up for LITK, and our goals are pretty much to strengthen our community, network, make friends, interact with others who share a common interest, et cetera.

I'm linking back from http://naturelle-chic.blogspot.com! I wish I could be there, I'm 2 hrs away and moving to Manhattan soon, and this sounds like a GREAT idea to meet and greet like minds in the area!

Yay!

Feb 6th sounds fine, although Times Square is affordable (only because that's where all the tourist are) There are plenty of little places near Union Sq (14th Street, near NYU territory actually) like Cosi (if you want a soup and sandwich type place) or there's this place called The Coffee Shop for Brazillian "inspired" food.

If coming from Grand Central, it's just one stop on the train...I know Manhattan pretty well so I'll work with whatever though...

OMG! I'm there! We could meet up at BBQ's in Times Square. They have a variety of foods served there and bbq as well. The prices aren't expensive at all. I'd be free for either date. I'm so excited! Gonna re-post this over my way.

I will link back to this from www.Fashionablynappy.com. I live outside of Los Angeles but whenever I'm in New York I love eating at Carmines in Time Square. Family style italian food. The hostess has a really cute TWA! I know I'm in So-cal but I like to pretend I'm a New Yorker. lol

Let me know.... And I love what you do here ;)

I will be there! Either the 30th or the 6th is fine for me as of right now.

Im so there! The 6th or 30th works for me too! I'll ask my friend at www.clumpsofMascasa.com to re-post once we get the details finalized.

*Suggestion! How bout we create an E-Vite with all the details and you can post the link here on the site or have everyone interested comment with their email and send out the invite. Im sure there is a free event website that we/you can post this on and distribute it that what.

Also Dallas BBQ is a great pace. I just went there NYE with friends for lunch!

Either way Im down and so excited!

New to your blog and excited to see that there will be a meet up. I am available on the days suggested and I have yet to visit BBQ's (which I've heard is pretty good). Count me in!

new to the blog as well, but I've been looking for a natural hair meetup in NYC so I'm down for whatever date.
I see the 30th has already been scratched, but I think the Saartjie Project will be in the city that day if anyone is interested in that

ok i really would like to go, what is the price? and it sayng sat at 7 and sun at 12 please explain!!! im sooooo trying to figure this out!

Z said...

@sheam, there's no price- you just pay for whatever food you get for yourself. It says 7pm on Saturday because that's when it starts, and 12am on Sunday is the approximate ending time, though I have no idea if it'll go that long. Hope this helped!

I'm new to this blog. This sounds interesting, but I am out of the loop. Can someone please fill me in briefly on this? Is this a first-time meet, what exactly is the purpose (conversation, hair comparison, networking, making friends, swapping info)is it only open to naturals, etc...?

I was really looking forward to this, BUT unfortunately there is a Nor'Easter heading this way on Saturday. Since I live a lil North of the city, I don't think I'll be able to make the trek through a snowstorm **sigh** :(

I don't live in NY but I would loooove to attend! Not too far from you though, so I may just make that drive ;) Hope to see you lovely ladies there!
