First of all, I'd like to know if there are any locked curlies out there that would be interested in contributing to LITK? It's an area that's been bothering me, and since I don't intend on locking Poofy anytime soon, I'm toying with the idea of getting outside input. I don't want to exclude the locked population from the target demographic of LITK.
So, if you think you can contribute and be a part of this, get in touch with me :)
Moving on. I have a hair 911 from a good friend of mine who's had dreadlocks for over 9 years (yes, nine, neuf, itoolu). Needless to say, her locs are silly long. I'm talking over two feet long. Now, the problem is that she only gets them washed about once a month when she goes to a stylist to get them twisted and braided up (>2ft long, bear in mind). She's looking for a way to clean her scalp to prevent itchiness that occurs when she doesn't clean it for that period of time. However, the cleaning method can't involve rinsing her hair because that would unravel the root twists. So basically, a dry scalp-cleansing method.
At this point, I blinked profusely and said I'd ask the readers. I mean, the closest I could think of was dry shampoos, but I don't know of any naturals that use those. I can't speak from personal experience, for as we all know, if I don't shampoo Poofy at least 3 times a week, my scalp basically riots in flakes.
So I'm turning this over to y'all, beloved readers. What can one use to clean the scalp without having to rinse out product? I'm befuddled and perplexed.
Don't forget, dreds, hit me up for the link-up to LITK :)

hey, i use organic root stimulator herbal cleanse 'dry shampoo' when i have my hair in braids. and it doesn't dry my scalp or my hair; it has a tingly effect which i like very much;
I don't use too often (more than once a week) because i think it will dry my scalp. she should it once a week
Hope this helps,
NO WAAAAY! A dreadlock post on LITK...YASSSS! Some locked love!
Anyway, I've only had mine in since last year August and finally had "the talk" with my (Igbo) mother that, yes, indeed, I am locking my hair...long story.
Anyway, dry shampoos suck from my experience tried it with a previous set and it was a hot mess. Understandable that your friend has to stretch her washing because I hear that at that length, it takes an incredibly long time to dry. But a natural alternative would be to soak a non-linty washcloth with witch hazel and go through the parts with that. The smell is not strong, in my opinion and you could probably get away with mixing in some EOs for scent (peppermint oil has a cooling effect on the scalp and could keep the itchies at bay temporarily). Quite possibly, you can mix it all in a spray bottle (not sure about how much you would dilute it) and spray it on the parts every so often.
Another thing, if she wants to stretch her washings, she can opt for styles that sorta keep the roots twisted. Bantu knots have a way of keeping the roots twisted and the resulting twistout is cute. Also, curls (like those that result from a twistout) tend to mask the fact that you haven't twisted in a while.
Wish I could contribute to LITK, but I'm still learning alot and honestly, I hardly keep up with my own postings. But wouldn't mind sending in a post once in a while for newbies...There are some EXCELLENT locked bloggers out there which can be found on the Locked Blog Exchange (a directory of sorts for locked bloggers)
I know that Taliah Waajid makes a spray shampoo called Moisture Clenz. I've never used it before, but it says it's good for cleaning the scalp if you have locks.

Hmm...The only thing I could think of was something like Baby Powder or a dry shampoo on her scalp.

Dry shampoos leave residue which is BAD if you don't wash all that often, I would go to witch hazel route, or my personal standby, alcohol. I know it's drying and all, but when you really dont wash your scalp for such long periods, you need somethings that's going to really clean it, and then I would follow it like an hour later with your moisturizer/oil of choice. Or, you could bantu knot your hair and wash it, hoping that the knots keep the roots from unraveling, but you'd still get to run water through it.
I second the ors herbal cleanse suggestion. I used to use it when I had extension braids. I also think seabreeze astringent can be effective as well.
Get a warm yet damp towel. I use a dot the size of a dime (Mango & Lime Tingle Shampoo or Tea Tree) Part your locks and rub/scratch you scalp with the towel. It is super relaxing and removes dandruff!!!!
Witch Hazel is the only no-wash alternative I've ever used and I'm happy with that. I usually follow it up with a little Tea Tree oil...
One of the best things that you can do for your hair is to use natural hair care products.
