The Castile Catastrophe

You know, I've been running a natural hair blog for almost four years now, and you'd think that there are some things I would have realized by now.

Story-time.

So, Poofy had been mad dry by the beginning of the summer, I'd been moving around and not conditioning her whatsoever, and then my scalp began a small rebellion by just flaking all willy-nilly. I decided to give her some love, went and hunted down Organix Coconut Conditioner because it's crack to my hair, as well as some organic virgin coconut oil. I was running low on shampoo so I used some peppermint castile soap, conditioned Poofy, and rubbed delicious smelling oil into her.

For the next few days, my scalp went MAD. As in, the flaking and itching was ridiculous! At first, I thought I was reacting to the coconut oil (because I'm a genius...). It wasn't until I was telling Miss Fizz about it that I realized that I had gone and used handfuls of undiluted castile soap on my scalp! Undiluted!

I should know better.

Seriously.

It took a few days of washing and conditioning to make my hair happy again. Morale of the story- do not mess with undiluted castile soap, especially if you're prone to dry skin. It will end in flakes and tears and your best friend mocking you over Whatsapp for your poor hair choices.

Yikes! Pele. Also remember that castile soap is alkaline, so you need to add something like lemon juice to it (even before you dilute) to bring down its pH.

Hope your scalp is back to normal now.

I love a castile soap, especially because it can be diluted at 10:1 with water. On the other hand, I stopped washing my hair, on a regular basis with shampoos or soaps, over six years ago. The sulfates are murder on your hair. If you have a conditioner you love, it will work great as a wash agent as well. I promise.

My hair is fresh, clean and soft after a "wash" with conditioner.

And castile...perfect for stripping away unwanted oils, etc.
