ACV Rinse for Locs

Poofy has been struggling with a recalcitrant scalp all her days, and I decided to start looking into more natural options in treating it. Most treatments for dandruff seemed geared towards loose hair, and I was reluctant to put any thick mixes in my hair because the residues could become trapped in my locs. Not cute.

I found a recipe over on Natural Afrodisiac for an apple cider vinegar rinse for the scalp. Most ACV rinses for locs are meant to be clarifying, in order to remove product buildup from the locs. Since I don't use product in my locs often because they don't get twisted, I'm not too worried about product buildup. I will be trying a clarifying rinse in the future, but right now, I'm more concerned about my scalp, hence this pre-shampoo treatment rinse.
Step 1: Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying and Dandruff Pre-Treatment1 cup filtered/distilled water1/4 cup apple cider vinegar5 drops tea tree oil1/2 teaspoon olive oilJuice from 1/2 lemon or 1 tblsp lemon juice (optional)Mix all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake well.  Spray or pour mixture onto hair, focusing primarily on the scalp.  Wrap hair in a towel for 30 minutes to 1 hour.  Follow with normal shampooing.
The original recipe also calls for a post-shampoo rinse that doesn't get rinsed out, but I didn't have all the ingredients on hand, so I didn't make it. I made in the above rinse in an old Gatorade bottle, one I could squirt it out of, drenched my scalp and wrapped my hair in a towel. I didn't use the lemon juice and generally eyeballed the measurements, and within seconds, I could feel the itch dissipating and my scalp tingling. I'm actually typing this with the towel on my head and my shower running in anticipation of the shampooing out. Since I won't be doing the post-shampoo rinse, I intend to condition with Organix Coconut Awesomeness conditioner (not exactly the real name, but close enough and my favorite scent), and then I'll moisturize my scalp to prevent the dry scalp from returning too quickly.

Wish me luck! Updates on the scalp condition will be on their way :)

I remember when you shaved Poofy in... '08? '09? You mentioned your scalp and dandruff even then. I hope this ACV rinse works for you :) *crosses fingers*

Extra virgin Coconut oil is amazing for dandruff because of it's anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties. You can apply it daily as a pomade or use it as a prepoo the night before you wash your hair.

I can't wait to read your results. I'm also a dread and I've tried two separate AVC rinses with no luck.

I don't have scalp issues, though, so my experiments were more for clarification.

Although I only use @ 3 products on my hair, I did manage to get rid of some gunk, so maybe I need to clarify more often.

I want to try this rinse too but I'll use white vinegar. I'm allergic to raw apple so I can't use ACV. I hope it works out for you.
